When God Speaks

The words of the Lord are pure words;

As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.

You, O Lord, will keep them;

You will preserve him from this generation forever.

Psalm 12:6-7

In contrast to the evil words of the wicked, we see that God’s words are pure, as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times. Silver was purified by heating it to its boiling point. At this stage any impurities will float to the top. The silversmith would scrape off the impurities, let the silver cool, and heat it up again to scrape off more impurities. Silver purified seven times (the number of perfection and God) is considered pure–without contamination; not mixed or adulterated with any other substance. God’s words were purified seven times. They are true. God’s word is “tried” (Psalm 18:30). This means that they are dependable and unchangeable. God will keep His word. He will preserve His words from this generation forever. God won’t take back anything that He has said. His promises will come to pass.

Prayer:

Lord, I praise You as the Unchangeable One, the God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I take great comfort in knowing that what You have said will come to pass. Help me to be patient and faithful as I wait for that time.

Please help me to watch my words. If they are critical or lying or proud, please try my heart and reveal to me any sin that is still lurking there. Please forgive me of that sin and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I thank You that You know my frame and are mindful that I am but dust (Ps. 103:14). I receive Your mercy and Your grace. Amen.
