Becoming Holy
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action,
keep sober in spirit,
fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
but like the Holy One who called you,
be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’”
1 Peter 1:13-16
That’s a tall order! Being holy ranks up there with being perfect. I’m not. But as I walk with Christ as Savior and line my thoughts and attitudes up with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit’s convictions, I can be becoming more holy. Jesus provided a way when I fail in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” And over it all hangs grace. Grace was completed at the cross. We will realize its completion at the revelation of Jesus Christ in the last days when He returns. That brings hope for today as I walk in fullness of His grace and hope for eternity as I look forward to the sure fulfillment of God’s promises.
How do we become holy? It is a work of the Holy spirit as we walk in obedience. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Renewing the mind happens when we spend time in the word of God and in prayer. When we search the Scriptures for answers to our daily questions. When we uncover the true nature of God through reading His love letters to us. When we choose to line our thoughts and attitudes up with God’s no matter what the world may be telling us.
Obedience check: Are you spending time daily with Jesus and in His word? Are you becoming more holy?
