A Root of Bitterness

“See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God;
that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble,
and by it many be defiled…”
Hebrews 12:15

Life is hard. People will hurt you. Circumstances will overcome you. Where will you turn? Will you allow bitterness and anger to form you into a critical, angry, begrudging person? Or will you turn to God in praise and gratitude and need, believing that He will work out all things for your good?

I haven’t faced imprisonment, stoning, or flogging unjustly. But I have faced rejection, verbal abuse, and unjust accusations. My emotions flare, and I want to strike back. My heart hurts for those who accuse me unjustly. Oh, that they might know the love of Jesus. I choose faith in the One who will ease all my hurts, give me a better course, and who will always walk beside me through the midst. I choose joy and life and Jesus.

Don’t let bitterness spring up within you. It is insidious and very pervasive. You will not be able to contain it to just one area of your heart. It will consume you , then it will reach out to strike others nearby with its venom of doubt, unrighteous anger, criticism, and turmoil.

May you choose freedom this day.
