Suffer Now for Eternity
“Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh,
arm yourselves also with the same purpose,
because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.”
1 Peter 4:1-2
The “therefore” follows a description of Jesus in glory at the right hand of God with angels, authorities (demons), and powers (demons and Satan) subjected to Him. Because this was His end game – His great goal, “therefore” he was willing to suffer physically, mentally, and spiritually here on earth. But His suffering drew Him closer to God, not further away in rebellion. Let’s face it, rebellion is our tendency – whether outward acts of rebellion or pulling away from God to rely on self and others. Jesus, however, allowed His sufferings to purify Him in Spirit and grew closer to God so that His end game was realized.
What’s your end game? Hopefully, your response was “heaven and eternity with God.” Our end game cannot be comfort, riches, luxury, painlessness, or even to be a good amn and to live a good life. These goals will all bring us to dismal failure in the sight of our God. Walk well in the obedience of Christ giving Him glory in all things (even your suffering) and allow Him to form your character for your eternal destiny. “Set your mind on the things above, not the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”” Colossians 3:2-4
