The Power of God

|

“Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again

to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away,

reserved in heaven for you who are protected by the power of God

through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

1 Peter 1:3-5

Wow! That’s a mouth full of promise! As Tyler just learned in Awana Cubbies, “For all have sinned” (Rom.3:23). Which is why the promise of God’s mercy is so great.  “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). God’s mercy saves us from that which we deserve–spiritual, eternal death. Rather, God has caused us to be born again to a living hope through Jesus. We are not just forgiven. Our old nature of sin has been put to death; we now have a new nature that is pleasing to God and is alive and able to hope and able to choose not to sin.

This living hope is not wishful thinking, but excited anticipation of eternity with God starting at the point of salvation. We have access even now to the throne of God, to His grace, His love, His presence. And we also have an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for us who are protected by the power of God through salvation by faith. This inheritance will be revealed to us in the last time. The power of God–the creative power that made the universe and you, the power over death that raised Jesus from the dead, the power to resurrect your old nature as a new nature, the power to keep us from the evil one–is ours through faith in Jesus. This power is assurance of the eternity with God and of our inheritance, but it is also the power to resist evil and sin, the power to overcome habits and addictions, the power to walk in the Spirit, the power to know joy and hope and peace.

Are you walking in God’s power today?
